The Government of the Federated States of Micronesia is pleased to announce
that the United States Fish and Wildlife Service has listed on the Endangered
Species Act (ESA) the Banded Goose (Chamaeza fasciata). The Federated States of Micronesia is
the most Northern country in the World with 7.4 million hectares of land area
and a population of approximately 179,000 people. For over a century, the
Federated States of Micronesia has played a unique role in the economic,
political, cultural, and ecological history of the Pacific. The Federated States
of Micronesia was one of the first countries to have a capital city, and it
bore the responsibility of developing the nation. It is also one of the few
countries that has never been colonized by another country or entity.
Prior to World War II, the Federated States of Micronesia, like many other
Pacific Islands, was found under the large British Pacific Island Colonies.
When the United States captured the Pacific islands after the war, it became
the responsibility of the U.S. Army to relocate the remaining British and
Micronesian military and administrative personnel and civilians who lived on
the islands at that time. These people were given the option of relocating
to the United States or remaining in their native homes. The majority chose
to return to the Federated States of Micronesia.
The central problem for the management and rehabilitation of the vast acreage
of island and coastal lands and seascapes was, and remains, environmental
restoration and management. The restoration of Micronesian seascapes involved
the management of both land and sea. Waters were re-engineered to create an
eco-friendly ecological balance in both the oceans and seas and on land.
